I recently had the opportunity to take part of PSA's online configurator team in Poissy. The configurator is a web tool that enables visitors to configure vehicles of their choice down to the smallest details.
As part of buying customer journey, this web tool helps the user to understand and discover PSA vehicles range, select available options et check financing details in order to potentially lead him to purchase decision.
How might we propose to customers an immersive configuration journey that answer their needs and ease their decision making?
How to integrate digital into the complexity of new vehicle purchase journey and how can it help final users?
Configuration journey may redirect user to other PSA’s services and shall ease new vehicle research for the user, who might be a customer as well. The main ambition of this project is to provide a configuration tool to each brands of PSA group, in several languages and in responsive design.
As UX designer, I had to think ahead of and during conception phase with Customer experience team, Product Owner and Brand representatives. Following business requirements, market evolution and user needs, my role was to ensure a good digital experience of vehicle configuration. I had the chance to work alongside a complete team. Each of team members having their own speciality.
In the process, we analyse the feature development from a business point of view, a user point of view and a technical feasibility before digging for final UI mock-ups. With the help of UX researcher, we kept our final users at the center during the whole conception phase by referring to UX personas and using sketches and wireframes.
My main way of communicating my designs was high fidelity wireframes. In order to be effcicient in design conception, I’ve created a sort of ‘Configurator UX design kit' in atomic design, helping me building rapidly and efficiently several screens of the configurator journey, as well in desktop, tablet and mobile.
In parallel of continuous improvement for the Configurator, one of my main mission was to completely rework a fundamental step of the journey: the design step, where user can customize his vehicle. Challenge was to take into account UX principles of the Configurator and ease customization of vehicle items for the user (colors, rims, seats…) in a way of ‘playing and building’.
After several iterations and guerrilla user tests, we were able to schedule a lab user test session with final users (people who intend to buy a new car in the next 6 months) in order to verify usability and satisfaction.
In the end, design step concept met user expectations and has been validated. Our work was not done here, I now had to specify it to UI designers and Front-End developers in order to put it online and verify intended behavior on each devices and for each brands.
